What’s the most important “heartfelt” holiday celebrated in February? You get points for knowing Valentine’s Day is on the 14th, but did you also know February is American Heart Month? The goal throughout the month is to raise heart disease awareness, the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Then on the first Friday in February we celebrate National Wear Red Day where we not only get to make a fashion statement, but we can use it to remind women they may be at risk of heart disease and not know it.

I hope you agree February is the perfect time to show our love for the ones we love by helping them take steps to keep their hearts healthy!

Now for a harder question: How can we celebrate Valentine’s Day right smack dab in the middle of heart health awareness month and still be kind to our hearts? One simple answer is to have sweet celebrations, with less added sugars. Both the American Heart Association and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend cutting back on added sugars, and using SPLENDA® Sweetener Products is an easy way to do just that!

For many of us, February is more than the harshest month of winter. It also can take a big toll on our newly resolved healthy lifestyle (aka our “resolutions” to start healthier habits as of January 1). There also are the well-known “winter blues” that come with darker and colder days, when we too often put off being physically active.

However, many people have their spirits lifted by some good old competition that involves throwing around a pigskin and kicking field goals. You know what I mean… the professional football playoffs as well as the “Big Game.” At game time suddenly the high calorie snacks and beverages start to magically appear. What is it about these high profile sporting events that make us – fans or not – throw those good healthy lifestyle intentions out the window?

Oh. My. Goodness. Here it is 2016 already. Two months of holiday celebrations are now behind us and it’s time to hunker down when it comes to eating more healthfully. Indeed, some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around how to start a healthy lifestyle, be it losing weight, exercising more or simply overhauling a diet that often contains too much added sugar.

That’s where sugar substitutes like SPLENDA® Sweetener Products can play an important role. Research shows that cutting back on added sugar intake can be a helpful tool in managing and reducing weight gain.

“Let’s not go overboard this year” is one of the mantras I recall hearing from my mother when it came time for holiday shopping. Always the frugal one, she was extremely cautious about not overspending or purchasing unnecessary gifts, and wanted family members to do likewise.

But her thrifty nature stopped there! When it came to preparing cookies, cakes, candy and other traditional holiday treats, it was “no holds barred.” After all, the holidays were the time to eat, drink (not alcohol though) and be merry. But there was often a “price” to pay… during this time of year, far too many of us gained some unwanted pounds.

However, times have changed...

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the foods that will be served at one of your holiday dinners? For me, it’s my mother’s recipe for turkey stuffing. Although it contains a loaf of white bread and a pound of pork sausage and is loaded with calories, it just wouldn’t be the holidays without it! If you feel the same way about the special dishes that are part of your holiday meals, but are concerned about year-end weight gain, help is on the way!

Turkey. Stuffing. Mashed potatoes. Gravy. Hot buttery yeast rolls. Pumpkin pie. When put together, all of these words may conjure up some mouth-watering memories of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. But wait! There’s more. What about appetizers and snacks that come before the main meal or are noshed on by cooks and friends alike when waiting for the bird to finish cooking?

While not always a part of the main meal, Thanksgiving appetizers certainly are an integral part of the meal in many households. Appetizers can range from simple relish plates that require little preparation (e.g., black olives and bread and butter pickles) to homemade soups and salads. If you like to be inventive with holiday appetizers, might I suggest some recipes that contain less added sugar than their traditional counterparts, all made possible thanks to SPLENDA® Sweeteners?

When you say “Thanksgiving dinner,” what comes to mind? The smell of a turkey roasting in the oven since dawn? That Grandma Grace’s amazing Fluffy Salad may be gone before you get a portion? That you would rather start with dessert since it is your favorite part of the meal? Yes, all three of the above would describe me, especially the latter. Although I did not coin the following phrase, I should have: “Life is short. Eat dessert first.” And I know I’m not alone!

As times change, so do many of our traditions. One difference (being the dessert person that I am) is that we said goodbye to the usual heavy, calorie-laden pumpkin pie as the dessert of choice on Thanksgiving. We still have a pumpkin-y dessert but because so many members of my family have made health-related lifestyle changes, desserts have taken on a lighter, less sugary profile.

In this blog, I’d like to share with you some popular dessert recipes consumers discovered at All of them use SPLENDA® Sweetener Products that will reduce the amount of added sugar in the recipe. We think you’ll want to give some of them a try as they would make delicious additions to any Thanksgiving meal.

If you (or a loved one) has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, please know that you are not alone. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), “Approximately 30 million children and adults have diabetes in the United States. Out of that number, nearly 95% have type 2 diabetes.”

The ADA wants you to know this: “Having diabetes should not prevent you from enjoying a wide variety of foods. You can learn how to eat healthful meals and include your favorite foods so you can thrive with diabetes.” ADA emphasizes, “Eating healthful meals is an essential part of managing diabetes.”

Here at SPLENDA LIVING®, we cannot cover all of the recommended dietary modifications you’ll probably need to make if you’re diagnosed with diabetes. However, we can help a little with information about a very important dietary change: reducing your consumption of added sugars.
