Small Swaps = Lifelong Benefits

Think back to the many positive healthy habits we learn early in life. Handwashing. Brushing teeth. Dressing appropriately for the weather. Drinking plenty of water. All are beneficial to our health, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

Eating a calorie-wise, nutrient-rich diet is another positive habit that many of us start out with, but too often discard. For both adults and children high-calorie, sugary, fatty foods, are widely available and can be hard to resist! It’s easy to get off the path of healthy eating, and convince ourselves that we are going to “start eating healthier tomorrow.”

But getting back into the healthy swing of things can sometimes seem overwhelming. However, a person need not overhaul his or her dietary habits in one fell swoop! Health experts recommend starting with just one or two changes, and then adding others. This approach to adopting healthier eating habits can make a big difference over time.

In the same way it would be ludicrous to ask a person to run a marathon when they have never run before, the same goes for food. Making dietary changes slowly is prudent advice. (Note: An individual who has health issues such as diabetes and is under the care of a physician or registered dietitian should follow that professional’s recommendations.)

For the sake of this blog, let’s focus on reducing excess intake of added sugar as one small swap that can benefit health. As discussed in an earlier blog about the health effects of too much sugar, the question was asked, “When was the last time you thought about the amount of added sugars in your diet?” That blog also noted, “Studies show that most Americans eat more than twice the amount of added sugar than is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Excess sugar intake can contribute to excess weight gain, and being overweight may increase the risk of developing serious health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease.”

In my personal opinion, reducing added sugar can be one of the easiest habits to change. As I have written before in the blog Save a Little, Benefit a Lot: 100 Calories a Day Can Make a Difference, research has demonstrated that small dietary changes do matter. The research study referenced in that blog found that a “small-changes” approach to diet and exercise can be a simple long-term lifestyle option that may positively impact weight gain and weight maintenance. The research also noted that no-calorie sweeteners can be a useful tool in achieving those small changes.
